How Technology is helping fight COVID-19

Tech has a history of helping the medical industry track and treat viruses and even during these difficult times of the global pandemic, tech and digital companies are playing their part on the forefront. Without a doubt COVID-19 has triggered an unprecedented demand for digital health technology solutions. These have even revealed successful solutions such as for population screening, tracking the infection, prioritizing the use and allocation of resources, and designing targeted responses.

According to the WHO, they have been receiving pro-bono support from technology to fight the pandemic. On 2 April 2020, 30 of the world’s leading digital technology experts gathered in a virtual roundtable to help advance WHO’s collaborative response to COVID-19. This meeting touched upon various important points mainly being the design and execution of the health initiatives for the WHO. It also discussed how to build on the organization’s COVID-19 efforts through new collaboration and knowledge sharing, to deliver targeted solutions through a coordinated effort to support countries facing stages of this epidemic in different ways and different times.

Other than this, we have seen the digital health community release a slew of new tools aiming to monitor the spread of the disease and facilitate better treatment. We are seeing another rise in digital epidemiology tools, chatbot helpers, EHR guidance tools and rapid-response test kits.

Following are some ways that puts a greater light on the ways that technology is playing its part:

• COVID-first virtual care – having video consulting platforms
• More psychiatric therapeutics – to cope with the emotional distress that this pandemic is causing
• Telemedicine integrations to meet new demands – relying less on the traditional methods
• New online training resource – to train for essential, safe and core practices for COVID-19.
• Plasma donation – to study those who have fought and have successfully recovered from the disease.
